Air Wings Deflectors - Tracey's Take

When used in conjunction with the Desert Dawgs (as I do when it gets cold in Minnesota) - and when angled right - the Air Wings really cut down the wind and 'helmet buffeting.' (Note: to use the Air Wings and Desert Dawgs together, you must order the "Fog Dawg" option.)

When used alone, I was pleasantly surprised to find they really work - as opposed to 'lower deflectors' I've had on my forks.

However, installing them took a bit of experimentation. Angling the holding bar properly was key, as was getting the 'plates' angled just right. Read more about my Cold Weather Riding Experiments.

We've been talking a lot about "Fog Dawgs"... but what exactly does that mean?

It simply means you get the same great wind and rain protection you've always gotten from the Desert Dawgs - AND - you also get cut-outs at the top of the engine guard bar.

The cut-out can accommodate not just fog lights/lamps, but also helmet locks, other engine guard-mounted deflectors (and even the Roadrunner drink holder!).

Fog Dawgs Motorcycle Rain Guards - Update!

A few weeks ago we ran into a small design issue we hadn't anticipated (particularly on the Harley-Davidson Road Glide motorcycles) while test-fitting the prototype for the Harley "Fog Dawgs" Rain Guards.

To which we first exclaimed: "ah damn!"

But after which, we were glad we found it out NOW instead of down the road!

And, went forth and resolved the issue. And I must say, it has made for an even BETTER product!

Of course, all this monkeying around did put us behind a bit in getting this into the market. We wanted them available NOW, as the weather has turned colder here in Minnesota as well as other places. But, alas, they are now expected to ship in early October (although we're still waiting to finalize the production schedule).

For the first time in a LONG time, Tim and I were able to go on a day-long charity ride with a group of fellow bikers from our church (and, of course, a whole bunch of other bikers). This is our group from Horizons church.

It felt so good to ride purely just for fun. (Just like, it might be fun to go to Sturgis as a regular biker instead of it being just work!) I haven't done much riding lately and it's often been to test product ideas. Not that I'm complaining, mind you, not too many people can say they ride for work! Well, March was absolute chaos around here. Apparently all you riders have decided that you've been sitting tight - both weather-wise and financially - for long enough, and you're unleashing yourselves! We've been inundated with orders - so much so that we went backorder on two of our most in-demand parts for several days.

I know the feeling. Last week we had such unusually warm weather for Minnesota that I got my first ride of the season in - on April 1! (I was aiming for March just so I could say 'March' ...) I didn't even need gloves, it was so warm (although I DID have the Desert Dawgs rain guards on). Of course it didn't last - just long enough to REALLY make us impatient!

What warmer weather means for us is renewed emphasis on new products. We've got quite a list, but exploring new product ideas is a hell of lot more do-able when you can tinker with the things ON a bike and ride with them. DealerExpo Show: Quality Over Quantity?

For the first time in our history, Leader had a booth at the DealerExpo show. The eCaddy Deluxe GPS and iPod / iPhone mounting kits had been nominated for a Kickstart Award, and we wanted to talk to motorcycle dealers about our products.

Many dealers are not aware of Leader or the high-quality mounting kits we make, and we want to change that! And we wanted to pick their brains about how our products might be displayed in their shops (and what it would take to convince them to do so).

Despite the lower show attendance and a decided lack of sleep (the people in the room above me were escorted out of the hotel at 5:15am by the Indy police), we made some quailty contacts.

The most challenging part of the trip? Returning home through a small snowstorm in WI and MN that made the roads quite slippery. We were both more than ready to quit by the time we arrived home at 5am!

Last ride of the Season?? And a show in California...

My dad and I put over 200 miles on our motorcycles last weekend (it hit 64 degrees here in Minnesota!) for our annual father/daughter ride (we had just about figured it wasn't going to happen, October was so lousy). It may have been the last ride of the season...

We'll be putting the motorcycles away for the season soon, and I didn't get nearly enough riding in this year!

Final Fit: Motorcycle Rain Guards for Kawasaki Vulcan & Suzuki C90

This past weekend we finalized the prototypes of the Desert Dawgs for both the Kawasaki Vulcan 2000 and the Suzuki C90 (Intruder).

Both items are expected to start shipping in mid-October.

The Suzuki C90 was a straightforward design and since my dad rides a Suzuki C90, we had easy access to a test fitter.

The Kawasaki Vulcan (factory engine guard bar) fitment, however, was a tough one. It required a design modification that slowed us down a bit: instead of utilizing a strap and clasp at the top as our other styles do (the radiator was too big to go in front and too tight to go behind), we created a "no-slip" patch on the top inside, which grips the engine guard bar.

Hail during Sturgis motorcycle show

There's always something unexpected at every motorcycle show. But hail stones in Sturgis?? In August?? Highly unusual!

And yet, that's what happened on Friday evening. And these were big suckers - nearly golf ball size - and they did some serious damage.

We feel lucky that only a couple bins were damaged (and much of our inventory soaked). Unfortunately, we have quite a bit of damage to our truck (making the cost of the show higher by the amount of our insurance deductible).

But certainly a memorable trip!
